           2. (U) Operation DESERT SHIELD conducted by USCENTCOM on 02/04/91.

           3. (U) KEYWORDS: RWO (REAL WORLD OPS), USA (US ARMY), ACTIVE
           COMPONENT, DEPLOYMENT, AVAILABILITY, SHORTAGE, TRAINING, PLANNING.

           4. (U) TITLE: DEPLOYMENT: PREDEPLOYMENT RANGE FINING

           5. (U) OBSERVATION: Weapons, magazines, tripods and traversing/
           elevating mechanisms were not available during pre-deployment
           range firing.
           6..(U) DISCUSSION: The majority of crew served weapons,
           magazines, and tripods were shipped in advance by the deploying
           units which created a shortage of equipment available during
           range firing. Some units had none at all.

           7. (U) LESSON LEARNED: The shortage/absence of weapons,
           magazines and tripods, caused a slow down in range firing. In
           most cases, crew served weapons +iring and qualification was
           ineffective.

           S. (U) RECOMMENDED ACTION: That deploying units keep all
           magazines -For individual weapons, and a required number of crew
           served weapons and tripods to facilitate zeroing and
           qualification.
